Kay Jewelers Critical Care Tower
Akron, Ohio

Akron Children’s Hospital embarked on a new ambulatory and critical care expansion. The project includes an expanded Emergency Center with 33 total patient positions served by a new rooftop helipad. Level 3 includes a new ambulatory surgical suite with 4 operating rooms, shell space for 2 additional operating rooms, a prep/recovery suite and central sterile. Shell space for future ambulatory clinics are on Levels 4 and 5. Levels 6 and 7 will be new private NICU beds, increasing their capacity from 60 to 75 beds.

As an IPD LEAN project, collaboration included co-location, huddles, LEAN boot camps, and full scale mockups. Mitchell led the medical equipment effort to identify reuse and facilitated decisions with end users to develop equipment lists, plans, specifications and costs.

Mitchell services included equipment procurement services which integrated product fairs, mockups, and RFP’s for surgical equipment, bedside nursing and other significant equipment purchases to support the new environment of care.

The addition of fetal surgery center was integrated into the labor and delivery floor, providing adjoining operating rooms for the interventional procedures to support fetal surgery as well as exit procedures, and immediate adjacency to infant resuscitation areas and neonatal intensive care.
